Girls Trip Packing List for a Weekend With Friends
Want your number first? Open the free Packing List Generator, or read on for how it works.

The fastest way to ruin a girls trip packing list is to write it alone. Four friends packing separately arrive with four hair dryers, four bottles of sunscreen, one phone charger between them, and nobody who thought to bring a bottle opener. Send one shared list a week out, assign the bulky items to one person each, and everyone's bag gets lighter at the same time.

Below is the personal list every single person packs, the share-or-skip table that removes the duplicates, and the outfit grid that covers a weekend in a carry-on.

Build the base first: our free packing list generator makes a starting list from your destination, trip length, and weather, and the whole group can work from the same one.

Updated September 2026. Security and airline rules change over time. TSA.gov is the authority for U.S. screening, and your airline's own baggage page is the authority for sizes and allowances.

Split the List Before Anyone Packs

This is the one step people skip and the one step that actually changes the trip. Somebody sends a single message with two columns: what everyone brings, and who owns each shared item.

The rule is simple. Personal items are duplicated on purpose. Shared items are owned by exactly one person.

Item Everyone brings one One person owns it Why
Toothbrush, deodorant, skincare Yes Nobody shares these
Prescription medication Yes Original labeled packaging, always in your own bag
Phone charger and cable Yes Label yours, they all look identical
Sunscreen Yes, one big bottle Four half-used bottles is pure wasted weight
Hair dryer Yes, if the rental has none Check the listing first, most have one
Straightener or curling iron Yes One tool, one plug, one queue at the mirror
Portable speaker Yes Two speakers is genuinely worse than one
Power strip Yes Rentals have three outlets and you have nine devices
Bluetooth camera remote or small tripod Yes The reason the group photos exist
First aid and recovery kit Yes See the section below
Snacks and breakfast basics Yes Saves a grocery run on arrival morning
Cooler or insulated bag Yes, if there is a beach or pool day Skip entirely otherwise
Games or cards Yes One deck is plenty
Trash bags and paper towels Yes Rentals run out and cleaning charges are real

Ask everyone to react to their own row in the group chat. That reaction is the confirmation, and it is what prevents the "I thought you were bringing it" conversation on Friday night.

If the group is sorting out who books what and how the shared costs get settled, our group trip planning guide covers that side properly. And if this trip is a bachelorette rather than a general getaway, our bachelorette party packing list has the bride-and-guests split plus the decoration rules, which are a different problem entirely.

The Girls Trip Packing List, Category by Category

This is the personal list. Everyone packs this, regardless of who owns which shared item.

Clothes

Shoes, and the Three-Pair Ceiling

Three pairs, no exceptions, and the heaviest pair goes on your feet on travel day. Shoes are what decides your bag size more than clothes do, and new shoes on a walkable weekend are how someone spends Saturday night in the rental with their feet up.

Toiletries and Beauty

Carry-on liquids go in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, all in one quart-size resealable bag, one bag per person. Our TSA liquid rules guide covers the exceptions, and our Can I Bring It? tool is faster than guessing on the specific things you are unsure about.

The 3-2-1 Outfit Grid

Here is the packing method that fits a weekend into a carry-on without anyone feeling underdressed.

Three tops, two bottoms, one dress. That is 3 x 2 = 6 outfit combinations from five pieces, plus a seventh from the dress. A three-night weekend has about five occasions worth dressing for. You are covered with a spare.

The grid only works if you pick a base first:

  1. Choose two neutral bottoms that go with everything: dark jeans plus one of a skirt, wide-leg pants, or shorts, depending on the weather.
  2. Choose three tops that all work with both bottoms. Test this at home by laying them out, not by imagining it.
  3. Add one dress for the nicest night, or one dressier top if dresses are not your thing.
  4. Add one layer in the same neutral family as the bottoms.
  5. Cap the shoes at three pairs and make sure at least two of them work with the dress.
  6. Add one spare top. Something always gets spilled on.

Our women's packing list has the full two-color base method behind this grid, plus the toiletry kit and the hair tool voltage rules for international trips.

Worked Example: Four Friends, Three Nights, One Rental

Four people were each packing what they would have packed alone. Then they ran the share-or-skip table. Here is what came out of the bags:

Duplicate removed Was Now Weight saved
Hair dryers 4 1 (or 0, the rental has one) About 5 lb
Straighteners 4 1 About 3 lb
Portable speakers 3 1 About 2.5 lb
Full-size sunscreen 4 1 shared bottle plus travel sizes About 2 lb
Full-size shampoo and conditioner 4 sets 0, the rental provides them About 4 lb
Beach towels 4 0, the rental provides them About 6 lb

That is roughly 22 pounds removed from four bags, which is more than five pounds each, and it is close to a third of a carry-on's volume. Nobody gave up a single outfit to get it.

The clothing side of the same trip, per person: 3 tops, 2 bottoms, 1 dress, 1 layer, 1 swimsuit, pajamas, 4 sets of underwear and socks, and 3 pairs of shoes with one pair worn. That fits a 22 x 14 x 9 inch carry-on with room left for a toiletry bag and one shared item. Confirm your bag actually fits the airline you booked with our carry-on size checker before you leave for the airport.

What Changes by Trip Type

The kind of girls trip changes the shoes and the bag far more than it changes the number of outfits. Here is the delta on top of the core list.

Trip type Add Skip The thing people get wrong
City weekend, food and shopping Comfortable walking shoes, a crossbody that zips, a foldable tote for what you buy A big hard suitcase, heels you have not worn Underestimating the walking, then buying flip flops at a pharmacy
Beach or pool Two swimsuits, reef-safe sunscreen, waterproof phone pouch, aloe Heavy going-out shoes, hair tools that lose to humidity One swimsuit, which is never dry when you want it
Spa or wellness Comfortable clothes for the whole day, hair claw, a book, slippers if the property has none A full face of makeup for every day Overpacking outfits for a trip you will spend in a robe
Cabin, lake, or hike Layers, non-slip shoes, bug spray, a real jacket, board games Anything white, anything delicate Assuming it stays warm after dark
Wine country or a food trip One dressier outfit, flat shoes for gravel, a corkscrew in a checked bag only Stilettos, a tiny purse Heels on vineyard gravel
Casino or resort weekend Refillable water bottle, eye mask, earplugs, a second pair of comfortable shoes Anything you would be upset to lose Only bringing the shoes that hurt
International Passport, plug adapter, offline maps, a card with no foreign transaction fee Devices that are not dual voltage Bringing a straightener that needs a converter

Our weekend trip packing list covers the general two-night formula, and if you are driving instead of flying, our road trip packing list covers the car kit and the trunk math.

Shared Bathrooms, Shared Outlets, Shared Trunks

Three physical constraints cause almost all the friction on a group trip, and all three are solvable while packing.

The bathroom counter. A rental bathroom has room for maybe two people's products laid out. Four sets of full-size bottles means someone's things live on the floor. The fix is a hanging toiletry bag with a hook, so your kit stays vertical and comes off the wall when you are done.

The outlets. A typical bedroom has two outlets, and there are four phones, two watches, a speaker, and a straightener. One person brings a power strip with USB ports. It is the single highest-value shared item on the whole list, and it weighs less than a pair of shoes.

The trunk. This one gets ignored until everyone is standing in the driveway. A midsize sedan trunk fits about four carry-on sized bags, or two large checked suitcases and nothing else. Agree on the bag size before anyone packs, not at the curb. Our how to choose luggage guide covers the sizes that actually stack.

If someone is flying in separately and meeting the group, that person should be the one carrying the least shared gear. Their bag is the one most likely to be delayed, and a delayed speaker is a shrug while a delayed first aid kit is a problem.

The Recovery Kit

One person carries this, it lives in the shared space at the rental, and it earns its weight on every single trip.

Put it somewhere obvious in the kitchen or living area, not in one person's bedroom. The whole point is that anyone can find it at 2am without knocking on a door. Our travel first aid kit guide has the full contents list if you want to build one properly.

Packing for Different Energy Levels

Groups rarely run on one speed, and packing can quietly solve what conversation sometimes cannot.

Bring earplugs and an eye mask. Even people who never use them at home should pack them for a shared rental. Somebody is going to bed at 10, somebody is coming in at 2, and both are fine when the sleeping half is not lying awake about it.

Bring one solo activity. A book, a podcast queue, or a sketchbook. A three-day trip with five people has an hour somewhere in it where you want your own company, and having something to do makes that feel normal rather than antisocial.

Bring your own snacks for the plane or car. Group snacks are for the rental. Personal snacks stop the hangry hour that derails an afternoon.

Bring the layer. The most common source of low-grade misery on a girls trip is one person being cold in every restaurant and too polite to say so.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I pack for a 3 night girls trip?

Three tops, two bottoms, one dress, one layer, a swimsuit if there is water, pajamas, four sets of underwear and socks, and three pairs of shoes with the heaviest pair worn. Add your personal toiletries and one assigned shared item. That fits a carry-on comfortably.

How do we avoid everyone packing the same things?

Send one message a week out with two columns: what everyone brings individually, and who owns each shared item. Hair dryer, straightener, speaker, power strip, sunscreen, first aid kit, and snacks are the usual duplicates. One owner each, confirmed in the chat.

How many outfits do I need for a girls weekend?

Fewer than you think. Three tops and two bottoms make six combinations, and a three-night weekend has about five occasions worth dressing for. Add one dress for the main night and one spare top for spills, and you are done.

What shoes should I bring on a girls trip?

Three pairs maximum: broken-in walking shoes, one pair of going-out shoes you have already worn, and slides for the rental. Wear the heaviest pair on the way there. Shoes are what decides your bag size, and blisters are the most common complaint on any city weekend. Heading to Las Vegas? Our Las Vegas packing list covers the Strip mileage, pool days and desert heat.

Can we all fly carry-on only?

Usually yes, and it is worth it. Everyone leaves the airport together instead of waiting at the carousel, and nothing gets lost. The shared items are what push a bag over, so spread them across the group rather than loading them all on one person. Check your bag with our carry-on size checker first.

What is the most forgotten item on a girls trip?

A power strip. Every rental has fewer outlets than the group has devices. Close behind: blister bandages, a bottle opener, a phone tripod for the group photos, and a laundry bag for wet swimsuits.

Who should carry the shared items if we are flying separately?

Whoever arrives first and whoever has the shortest connection. Delayed bags happen on tight connections, so the essentials like the first aid kit should travel with someone on a direct flight. Anything replaceable at destination can ride with anyone.

Should we do matching outfits?

Only if everyone genuinely wants to, and only if one person orders them in a single batch so the sizes and colors match. Order early enough to swap sizes. A coordinated color palette gets you the same photos with none of the ordering hassle.

The Short Version

Write the list together, not alone. Personal items get duplicated, shared items get exactly one owner, and one message a week out sorts the whole thing.

Pack the 3-2-1 grid: three tops, two bottoms, one dress, one layer, and three pairs of shoes with the heaviest pair worn. Skip anything the rental already provides, especially towels and shampoo. Somebody brings the power strip, somebody brings the recovery kit, and everybody brings earplugs.
