Two rules apply at dinner in the main dining room on any night: cover up over swimwear, and skip cutoff jeans, sleeveless shirts for men, sportswear and flip flops. The buffet is casual all day and all night, which is the standard escape hatch if you skip packing an elegant outfit entirely.
Shorter sailings usually have one Cruise Elegant night. Sailings of six days or more usually have two. Check your itinerary in the app, because it varies by ship and route.
Worked Example: Seven Nights in the Caribbean
Here is a real bag for a seven-night Caribbean sailing with two elegant nights and four port days, packed by one adult into a single checked bag plus a carry on.
Evening count. 7 nights = 5 cruise casual dinners + 2 Cruise Elegant. So: 5 casual outfits, 2 elegant. The casual outfits reuse the same two pairs of nice pants with different tops, which cuts the bulk almost in half.
Day count. 3 sea days + 4 port days. Sea days need a swimsuit and a cover-up. Port days need shorts, a top, walking shoes and a day pack. So: 3 swimsuits, 4 daytime outfits, 1 sun shirt.
Shoe count. Walking shoes worn on the plane, flip flops for the deck, one dressy pair, water shoes for the beach day. Four pairs, and three of them are light.
The math that saves space. 7 tops plus 3 bottoms in coordinating colors gives you 21 combinations, which reads as a different outfit every day without packing 21 items. That is the single highest-leverage packing trick on a cruise, where you are photographed constantly and change clothes twice a day.
In the carry on for embarkation day: swimsuit, sunscreen, medication, documents, a change of shirt, phone charger, the magnetic hooks, and the wine bottle if you are bringing one. Checked bags are delivered to cabins over several hours, and the pool opens long before your suitcase arrives.
Documents: Passport or Birth Certificate?
This one causes more trouble than anything else on the list.
A closed-loop cruise, meaning one that departs from and returns to the same U.S. port, has historically allowed U.S. citizens to sail with a birth certificate plus a government-issued photo ID rather than a passport. That is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection rule, not a Carnival rule, and it does not cover every itinerary.
A passport is still the better choice for one blunt reason: if you miss the ship in a foreign port, or you have a medical emergency and need to fly home, a birth certificate will not get you on a plane. Flying back into the United States requires a passport.

The Cabin: Small Things That Solve Big Problems
Carnival cabins are compact and efficient, and a handful of tiny items make them feel twice the size.
Magnetic hooks. The walls and ceiling are steel. Six strong magnetic hooks give you somewhere to hang hats, wet swimsuits, lanyards, the daily schedule and a tote bag, all without touching your limited closet space.

Motion Sickness and Sea Days
Modern ships have stabilizers, and most sailings are smooth. Some are not.
If you are prone to motion sickness, take something before you sail, not after you feel it. That timing is the whole trick. Wristbands, tablets and patches all work for different people, and the ship's shop sells options if you forget.
Two more things help. Book a midship cabin on a lower deck, where motion is least. And when you feel it starting, go outside and look at the horizon rather than lying down in an interior cabin, which is the worst possible place to be. One rule for every port day: know the all aboard time, which is usually set well before the ship departs, and set a phone alarm for an hour before it. Ship time and local time are not always the same.
