Winter Road Trip Planning
A winter road trip is planned backward from everything a summer trip is planned from. In July you pick the route you want to see and fit the days around it. In January you pick the route with the least snow risk and then find out what is worth seeing along it. That inversion is the whole discipline, and the trips that go badly are almost always the ones that started with scenery.
Three things change once the calendar turns. Snow risk concentrates at a small number of named chokepoints rather than spreading evenly across a state. Roughly a third of the country's best scenic roads are gated shut and will not reopen until spring. And daylight collapses, which quietly cuts a realistic driving day from eight hours to about six. Handle those three and winter driving is calm. Ignore any one and you end up making decisions in the dark on a pass in falling snow.

How to Pick a Winter Road Trip Route by Snow Risk
Snow risk is not a state level property. Arizona has one of the snowiest interstate segments in the Southwest and one of the mildest in the country, about 140 miles apart. What you are actually reading is elevation, latitude, and whether the road crosses a range or runs alongside it.
Four questions decide a winter route:
- Where does it gain elevation? Every serious winter closure and chain requirement in the country happens on a pass. Find the high points of your route and you have found your risk.
- How long is the exposed stretch? A 12 mile pass with towns at both ends is a delay. A 90 mile stretch with no services in between is a different problem entirely.
- What is the bailout? For every high crossing on your route, know the alternate that stays low, even if it costs three hours.
- How many chances does the trip take? A route with one pass has one bad day of exposure. A route with five has five.

The chokepoints that actually cause the problems
These are the named high crossings that generate the closures, chain controls and multi-hour backups on the interstate system. If your route crosses one, it is the thing to watch every morning.

The corridors that stay open
If your dates are fixed and your route is not, these are the lowest snow risk long distance drives in the country. None of them are guaranteed, because ice storms happen in Texas and Georgia and shut everything down when they do, but the odds are on your side.

The one route swap worth knowing. If your plan is a northern crossing in January and it can flex, dropping to I-40 or I-10 for the middle third and coming back north at the end costs you a day and removes most of the risk. Winter route planning is mostly about being willing to make that trade before you leave rather than in a motel lobby at 9 p.m.
What Closes for the Season
This is the part that catches people who have only driven these roads in summer. A large number of the best drives in the country are not merely risky in winter, they are physically gated and unplowed for months, and no amount of four wheel drive changes that.

Two distinctions inside that table matter. Seasonal gates are calendar closures with a known reopening range, and they are absolute. Weather closures are the parkway and park roads that open and shut day to day all winter, sometimes for a few hours and sometimes for three weeks. The planning rule is simple: never build a winter itinerary that depends on a scenic road being open. Route on the interstate or the state highway, and treat the scenic road as a bonus you check the morning of.
Short Daylight and the Real Driving Day
This is the most underestimated constraint in winter driving, because it is invisible until you are in it. In late December, sunset lands between about 4:15 and 4:45 p.m. across the northern tier and between about 5:15 and 5:45 p.m. across the southern tier. Add the practical reality that you are scraping a windshield in the morning and that the first hour after sunset is when refreeze creates black ice, and the usable driving window is much narrower than the clock suggests.

Work in daylight windows rather than hours. Pick tomorrow's stop by asking what you can reach before dusk with an hour of slack, not by asking how far you can stand to drive. That single change removes most of the pressure that makes people push through a pass they should have waited out.
Three habits that follow from it:
- Front load the mountain crossing. Do any pass in the late morning, after plows have been through and before afternoon storms build. Never at dusk.
- Book the stop that is short of the pass, not past it. If a crossing is questionable, sleep on the near side and look at it fresh.
- Treat 4 p.m. as the finish line. Anything after that is a bonus, not the plan.
Night driving in winter is a genuinely different activity from night driving in July: black ice forms in the temperature drop after sunset, headlights on falling snow produce a disorienting tunnel effect, plows work at night with limited visibility, and wildlife moves at dusk. None of that is a reason to never drive after dark. It is a reason not to schedule it.

Chains, Traction Tires and What the Laws Actually Require
Terminology first, because the marketing on tires is deliberately confusing.
M+S, mud and snow. A tread pattern designation. Most all-season tires carry it. It is self certified by the manufacturer and it does not mean the tire was tested in snow.
The three-peak mountain snowflake symbol, 3PMSF. A tested rating for severe snow performance. Winter tires carry it, and so do some all-weather tires. Where a state says "traction tires required," this symbol is usually what satisfies it.
Winter tires versus all-seasons. The tread pattern is the visible difference and the rubber compound is the important one. All-season compounds stiffen below about 45 degrees and lose grip long before there is any snow on the road. A winter tire stays pliable. This matters for braking on cold dry pavement, not only in snow.
All-wheel drive is not a braking system. AWD helps you accelerate and it does nothing at all for stopping or cornering on ice. A front-wheel-drive car on winter tires out-brakes an AWD SUV on all-seasons every time. This is the single most common miscalculation in winter driving.
How the traction laws work
The details differ by state and change, so verify with the state DOT before you rely on any of it. The structure is broadly the same everywhere:
- A traction or tire requirement level. Adequate tread depth plus either 3PMSF tires, all-wheel drive, or chains carried. Colorado runs this as a passenger vehicle traction law on the I-70 mountain corridor for most of the winter, and Washington posts traction tires required on its passes.
- A chains required level. Chains on the drive wheels regardless of drive type, with limited exemptions for four-wheel-drive vehicles with proper tires. California signs this as R-1, R-2 and R-3 conditions, where R-2 is the common one and R-3 requires chains on everything.
- A closed level. The road is shut and the answer is to wait, not to argue.
Practical points that save trips:
- Buy chains that fit your specific tire size, and put them on once in your driveway before the trip. Learning in a pull-off in the dark with numb hands is a bad first lesson.
- Check your rental agreement. Many rental companies prohibit chains outright and some prohibit driving on chain-controlled roads. Know this before you plan a route through Donner or Snoqualmie in a rental.
- Carry them even if you doubt you will use them. Chain controls are enforced at checkpoints, and being turned around after four hours of driving is the expensive version.
- Tire pressure drops with temperature, roughly one pound per square inch for every 10 degree drop. Check it cold at the start of the trip and again if you gain significant elevation.
Timing a December Trip
December has two overlapping problems: weather and everyone else.
The traffic peaks are predictable. The heaviest days are the Friday and Saturday before Christmas, December 23, December 26, and the first two days of January. Departing on Christmas Day itself, or on any Tuesday or Wednesday in the middle of the month, buys you a noticeably emptier road.
Storms and the freeze-thaw cycle. Mid-December through February is when frontal systems cross the country on a rhythm of roughly every three to five days. That is enough of a pattern to plan against: a three day trip has a real chance of dodging weather entirely, and a ten day trip will meet at least one system. Build one flexible day into any winter itinerary longer than four days, and choose lodging you can move without a fight.
Book lodging on the route, not only at the destination. The most common winter trip failure is a nonrefundable room 200 miles past a pass that closed. Reserve the intermediate nights with cancellable rates and lock only the destination.
Departure hour matters more in winter. Leaving at 8 a.m. instead of noon means plows have already run, the temperature is rising rather than falling, and you have your full daylight window ahead instead of behind you.
Parks and scenic areas in winter are quiet and restricted at the same time. Fewer people, fewer open roads, shorter visitor center hours, and services that close for the season. Verify what is open rather than assuming a park is a park.

The Car and the Kit
Two separate jobs, and both belong on the pre-trip list rather than the packing list.
The vehicle. Battery tested, because cold is what finds a weak one. Coolant rated for the lowest temperature on your route. Winter rated washer fluid, and a spare jug, because slush eats it fast and visibility is safety. Tires checked for tread depth and pressure. Wipers replaced if they are streaking. Fuel kept above half a tank the entire trip, which is a warmth reserve as much as a range reserve.
The kit. A winter car kit is built around three jobs: staying warm without the engine running, getting unstuck, and being found. What is the safest route for a winter road trip across the country?
The southern corridors. I-10 from Southern California to Florida is the standard winter crossing because it stays largely snow free, with I-20 and I-8 as regional alternates. Northern routes are drivable in winter but they concentrate risk at a handful of high passes, and a single closure at Donner, Snoqualmie or the Colorado I-70 corridor can cost a full day.
How many hours should I drive per day in winter?
About six, against eight in summer, and measured against daylight rather than the clock. In late December you have nine to ten usable hours, you lose the first to warming and scraping, and you want to be parked before dusk when refreeze starts. Six hours of driving plus stops fits inside that with an hour of weather slack left over.
Do I need chains if my car has all-wheel drive?
Often yes. AWD helps with acceleration and does nothing for braking or cornering on ice, and most chain control levels still apply to AWD vehicles unless they are on tires carrying the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol. Under the strictest level, several states require chains on every vehicle regardless of drive type. Carry them, fit them once at home, and check your rental agreement if the car is not yours.

Which scenic roads are closed in winter?
Most high alpine park roads. Going-to-the-Sun in Glacier, Trail Ridge in Rocky Mountain, Tioga Road in Yosemite, the Beartooth Highway, Independence Pass, the North Cascades Highway, Crater Lake's rim and north entrance, and the Lassen Park Highway are all gated for months. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive are different: they close and reopen day to day depending on ice, so check the live status the morning you plan to drive.
When is the worst time to drive in December?
The Friday and Saturday before Christmas, December 23, December 26, and January 1 and 2 are the heaviest traffic days. Weather risk is highest from mid-December onward as frontal systems move through every few days. Christmas Day itself and midweek days early in the month are the quietest driving of the month.
What should I do if a pass closes while I am driving toward it?
Stop short of it and wait, in a town with services. Do not queue at the gate for hours in a line with no restrooms and a dropping fuel gauge, and do not take an unfamiliar mountain detour that the map suggests, because those roads are lower priority for plows and are frequently worse than the closed highway. Check the state 511 service for the reopening estimate and take the room.
