RV Checklist for Setting Up at the Campsite

Setting up an RV has one correct order, and almost every expensive mistake comes from doing steps out of it. Scout the site on foot, position the rig, chock the wheels, level side to side, then connect power, then water, then sewer, and only then set up the outside. Chocks go on before you unhitch or lower anything, and the surge protector goes on the pedestal before your power cord does.

Done in that order, arrival takes 20 to 35 minutes and nothing gets damaged. Done out of order, you get a trailer that rolls, a converter cooked by a bad pedestal, or a leveling job you have to redo three times.

Before You Pull In: The Two Minute Site Scout

Stop the rig in the road, put on the hazards, and walk the site before a single wheel touches it. This is the two minutes that saves the whole afternoon.

Walk it and look for:

Then decide two things before you move: which direction the rig points, and the target spot for the wheels. Mark the wheel target with a shoe or a leveling block so your spotter has something to aim at.

The single most common arrival mistake is backing in first and discovering afterwards that the sewer inlet is now 30 feet from your outlet. Sewer hoses do not stretch.

The RV Checklist for Setting Up, In Order

This is the core sequence. Print it and tape it inside a cabinet door.

Position

  1. Walk the site, decide direction and wheel target
  2. Back in or pull in with a spotter, aiming at the marked target
  3. Stop, get out, and check the position against the utilities and the slide path before you commit
  4. Put the transmission in park, set the parking brake, engine off

Secure

  1. Chock the wheels now, before anything else, on both sides of a tire on both sides of the rig
  2. If towing, unhitch only after chocks are in place
  3. Turn the pedestal breaker off

Level

  1. Check level side to side with a bubble level or a leveling app
  2. Drive up onto leveling blocks under the low-side wheels until it reads level side to side
  3. Re-chock after any movement, since blocks move the wheels
  4. Level front to back with the tongue jack, or with the automatic leveling system if you have one
  5. Lower the stabilizer jacks last, and only to stabilize, not to lift

Utilities, in this order

  1. Plug the surge protector or electrical management system into the pedestal, then your cord into it, then turn the breaker on
  2. Attach the pressure regulator at the spigot, then the potable water hose, then the filter, then the rig
  3. Connect the sewer hose at both ends with the ground inlet clamped or weighted, and keep both valves closed for now
  4. Turn on the propane if you use it, and confirm the fridge switched over

Rig ready

  1. Extend the slides, after one more look at what is beside and above them
  2. Lower the steps and check they are solid
  3. Turn on the water pump only if you are running from the tank, otherwise leave it off
  4. Turn on the water heater, and confirm it has water in it first

Outside

  1. Extend the awning, and only if wind is not forecast
  2. Set up the mat, chairs, table, and lights
  3. Note the site number, the quiet hours, and where the restrooms and dump station are
  4. Walk one full circle around the rig, looking up and down, before you sit down

That is the full rv set up check list in the order that keeps things intact. The two items people skip are number 5, chocking before anything else, and number 13, the surge protector before the cord.

Backing In Without a Fight

Backing an RV is a communication problem more than a driving problem. Two rules solve most of it.

Rule one: use radios, not shouting. A pair of cheap walkie talkies or a phone call on speaker removes the entire category of argument that starts with "I said stop." Hand signals fail the moment the spotter leaves the mirror.

Rule two: the spotter owns one side and stops the rig, not steers it. The spotter stands at the rear corner on the driver's blind side, stays visible in a mirror at all times, and says only distance and stop. Nobody needs "turn your wheel left."

A practical script:

  1. Driver announces the target: "Aiming for the fire ring on my left, stopping at the picnic table."
  2. Spotter walks the path first and clears it.
  3. Driver reverses in short bursts, stopping every few feet.
  4. Spotter calls distance in feet: "Ten feet. Five feet. Two feet. Stop."
  5. Either person can say stop for any reason, no discussion, and the driver stops instantly.
  6. Driver gets out and looks at least twice during the maneuver.

The get-out-and-look step feels slow and is faster than a pull-forward-and-retry loop. It is also how you catch the branch nobody saw.

Leveling: Side to Side First, Always

Level matters for sleep, for door alignment, for drainage, and for absorption refrigerators, which can be damaged by running badly out of level for long periods.

The order is side to side first, then front to back. Do it the other way and every front-to-back adjustment throws the side-to-side reading off again.

Worked example: how many blocks

Your leveling app reads 2.1 degrees low on the driver's side. Your rig's track width, measured tire center to tire center across the axle, is 96 inches.

The lift you need is the track width times the tangent of the angle:

Standard interlocking leveling blocks are about 1 inch of usable lift each, and they compress slightly on soft ground. So you build a ramp of 4 blocks under each driver's side wheel, drive up, and re-check.

Two practical notes. Build the ramp as a staircase so the tire climbs rather than hits a wall. And put a block under each wheel on that side if you have tandem axles, because lifting one wheel of a pair puts the whole load on the other one.

A useful rule of thumb for a rough estimate: on a typical 96 inch track, each degree out of level is about 1.7 inches of lift, so a bit under 2 blocks per degree.

Stabilizer jacks are not jacks

Scissor jacks and stabilizer jacks stop the wobble when you walk around inside. They are not designed to carry the weight of the rig, and using them to lift a corner can bend a frame. Lower them until they make firm contact and stop. If you need lift, that is what blocks and the tongue jack are for.

Connecting Utilities in the Right Order

Each connection has one right sequence and one specific reason for it.

Leave both waste valves closed while you are camped. Dump when the black tank is around two thirds full, and dump black first, then gray, so the gray water rinses the hose. One more habit worth building: before you plug in, look at the pedestal. Scorch marks around the outlet, a loose faceplate, or a receptacle that wiggles are all reasons to ask for a different site rather than to test your protector's alarm.

Setting Up the Outside Living Space

Once the rig is level and connected, the outside takes about 10 minutes and turns a parking spot into a campsite.

What a Realistic Arrival Looks Like

Here is a timed breakdown of an unhurried arrival at a full hookup site, back-in, two people.

Arrival and Departure Are Two Different Lists

People often try to run one checklist in both directions, and it does not work. The order reverses, and the failure modes are completely different.

What Goes Wrong Most Often

Unhitching before chocking. An unhitched trailer on a slope you did not notice moves faster than you can react. Chocks first, every time, even on flat asphalt.

Plugging into the pedestal without a protector. Campground voltage sags badly when a whole loop runs air conditioning in a heat wave, and low voltage is what kills air conditioner compressors and converters.

Leveling front to back before side to side. You will simply do it twice.

Extending a slide into something. A tree, a post, the neighbor's awning, a picnic table. Look at the slide path from outside before you press the button, not after.

Running the water heater dry. Confirm it is full before you switch it on, particularly after winterizing or after arriving with empty tanks.

Opening the black valve on arrival and leaving it open. Liquid drains away and solids stay behind. Keep it closed and dump when the tank is mostly full.

Setting up in the dark. If you cannot arrive in daylight, do the minimum: chock, level roughly, power, and go to bed. Water, sewer, and the outside can wait for morning.

How do I know how many leveling blocks I need?

Can I level an RV with the slides out?

Level first, then extend the slides. Slides shift weight and change the reading, and extending a slide on an unlevel rig puts a twist through the mechanism that it is not designed for. If you have to adjust level after the slides are out, bring them in first.

What should I do if the campsite is too unlevel to fix with blocks?

Ask for a different site. Most rigs run out of practical adjustment at around 4 to 6 inches of lift on one side, and stacking blocks higher than about 4 inches gets unstable. Campgrounds move people for this regularly, and it is a far better conversation than a bent frame or a refrigerator that will not cool.
