What the Temperature Rating on a Cold Weather Sleeping Bag Really Means
Most bags sold in the US and Europe are tested to ISO 23537 (which replaced EN 13537). A lab puts a heated, sensored mannequin in the bag, wearing a base layer and a hat, on a standardized pad, and measures heat loss. The test produces three published numbers.

The trap is that plenty of marketing quotes the limit rating as "the rating." A bag stamped "20 degree bag" often means limit 20°F and comfort somewhere around 30°F. If you take that bag out on a 20°F night expecting comfort, you will be cold and blame yourself.
Read the spec sheet and find the comfort number. If the maker only publishes one number and does not say which standard it comes from, treat that number as a limit rating and mentally add roughly 10 degrees to get a working comfort estimate. Then ask why they are not publishing tested numbers.
The test conditions you are quietly agreeing to
The ISO figure assumes you are on a pad with a specified insulation value, wearing a base layer and a hat, not hungry, not dehydrated, and not soaked. Change any of those and the rating stops applying. This is not a flaw in the standard, it just means the number describes the bag, not your night.
Things that shift your real world experience colder than the label:
- A thin or summer sleeping pad, which is the single biggest one
- Damp insulation, whether from sweat, condensation, or spindrift
- Going to bed cold, hungry, or dehydrated
- Wind coming through a poorly pitched shelter
- Being a cold sleeper, which many people simply are

Down vs Synthetic in Real Cold
This is the argument that never ends, and the honest answer is that both are correct in different conditions.

Choose down for cold, dry conditions, for multi-day trips where pack weight and volume matter, and when you have the discipline to keep it dry. Deep winter in a continental climate is classic down territory, because very cold air is dry air.
Choose synthetic for wet cold, which is the nastier problem. Coastal winter, shoulder season rain that turns to snow, canoe or packraft trips, or a bag that lives in a car and gets treated roughly. Also choose synthetic if you are a heavy condensation producer in a single wall tent.
Hydrophobic down (down treated with a durable water repellent finish) sits in between. It absorbs water more slowly and dries faster than untreated down. It does not make down waterproof, and a soaked treated bag is still a soaked bag, so treat it as a delay rather than a solution.
Fill power, and why a bigger number is not automatically a warmer bag
Fill power measures the loft of down: how many cubic inches one ounce of it fills under a standard test. Common figures run from around 550 up past 900.
Here is the part people miss. Fill power measures quality, not quantity. Warmth comes from total loft, which is fill power multiplied by fill weight. A bag with 800 fill power down and a small fill weight can be less warm than a bag with 650 fill power and a much larger fill weight. The 800 fill bag will be lighter and pack smaller for whatever warmth it does provide, so fill power is a weight and packability spec, not a warmth spec.
So when you compare two cold weather bags:
- Compare the comfort ratings first. That is the warmth answer.
- Then compare fill weight to understand how much insulation is in there.
- Then look at fill power to understand how efficiently that warmth is packaged.
A maker who publishes all three is telling you something. A maker who publishes only fill power is telling you something too.
Fit and Shape
A cold weather sleeping bag works by trapping a thin layer of air you heat with your own body. Too much empty space inside and you spend the night heating air you do not need. Too little and you compress the insulation, which is exactly as bad.
- Mummy. Tapered, hooded, minimal dead air. This is the winter shape, and for real cold it is not really optional. The hood and the draft collar are doing serious work.
- Semi rectangular or modified mummy. More room at the knees and shoulders, a warmth penalty in exchange. Fine for cold shoulder season, marginal in deep winter.
- Rectangular. Comfortable, no hood, huge dead air volume. Car camping in mild conditions only.
- Quilt. No back insulation, no hood, attaches to the pad. Lighter for the warmth, but winter quilt use is an advanced technique that depends on a really good pad and a disciplined draft seal. If it is your first cold trip, use a bag.
Features that earn their weight in winter
- Draft collar. An insulated tube around the neck that stops the bellows effect every time you roll over. On a genuinely cold bag this is non negotiable.
- Draft tube behind the zipper. Stops a cold stripe running the length of your body.
- A hood that actually cinches. Two adjustment cords, one for the face opening and one for the hood depth, so you can close it down to a small breathing hole.
- A zipper that does not snag. Test this in the store. Snags are a nuisance in summer and a real problem with cold hands at 3 a.m.
- Length. Get the right length. Extra foot space is dead air you have to heat, and a bag that is too short compresses the insulation at your feet.
Try it on the way it will be used
Get in the bag on the floor of the shop, in a base layer if you can. Roll onto your side. Draw your knees up. Can you turn without twisting the whole bag around you? Does the hood stay put? Is there a fist of extra space at your feet or a foot of it? Five minutes of this tells you more than any review.
Pad R-value: The Half of the System People Skip
Your body compresses the insulation underneath you flat. Flat insulation traps no air, so beneath you the bag is doing almost nothing. Everything between you and the ground is the pad's job.
Pads are tested to ASTM F3340, adopted around 2020, which finally made R-values comparable across brands. R-values also add, which is the most useful fact in winter camping.

The standard winter setup is a closed cell foam pad under an insulated inflatable. The foam adds R-value, protects the inflatable from sharp ice and sticks, gives you a puncture backup that cannot fail, and doubles as a sit pad while you cook.
If you take one thing from this guide: a 0°F bag on an R 2.5 pad is not a 0°F setup. It is a cold night waiting to happen. Fix the pad before you upgrade the bag.
Worked example: choosing a setup for a 5°F night
Forecast valley low is 15°F. Your campsite sits about 1,500 feet higher in a basin where cold air pools on a clear night, so plan for 5°F.
- Bag: comfort rating 0°F. That gives 5 degrees of margin, which absorbs a damp bag, a colder than forecast basin, or a night when you went to bed underfed.
- Pad: inflatable rated R 4.2 plus foam pad rated R 2.0 gives a combined R 6.2. Above the 5.0 winter bar.
- Liner: a fleece liner, which realistically adds a few degrees and keeps body oils off the down. Treat manufacturer liner claims as optimistic.
- Sleep clothes: dry base layer, dry socks, warm hat, all stored in the bag's stuff sack and never worn while hiking.
- Hot water bottle: a leakproof wide mouth bottle of boiled water at your feet at bedtime.
If your only bag has a comfort rating of 20°F, that same night is not automatically off. A fleece liner, dry sleep clothes, a hot water bottle, a puffy jacket worn inside the bag, and a stacked pad will close a real part of the gap. It will not close 15 degrees safely, so on a night like that you either change the plan or borrow a warmer bag.
Liners, Overbags, and Other Ways to Extend a Bag
- Silk liners: minimal warmth, very light, mostly there to keep the bag clean.
- Fleece and synthetic liners: a real if modest warmth gain, and a noticeable bulk and weight cost. Makers often quote generous numbers, so test yours before you rely on it.
- Vapor barrier liners: a non breathable layer worn or slept in that stops your body moisture from reaching the insulation. On multi day trips below about 0°F this keeps a down bag from gaining ice weight night after night. It feels clammy and it is an acquired taste, but it works.
- Overbags: a light synthetic bag pulled over your main bag. Adds warmth and catches condensation before it hits the down. Bulky.
- Wearing your puffy jacket inside the bag: free, and it works, as long as the jacket is not so thick that it compresses the bag's own loft.
Caring for a Cold Weather Sleeping Bag
The bag you own in five years is decided by how you store it now.
- Store it uncompressed. Hang it or keep it in the big cotton or mesh sack it shipped with. Months in a stuff sack permanently flattens loft, down and synthetic alike.
- Use a liner so the bag needs washing less often. Washing is the main thing that ages down.
- Wash rarely, and correctly. Front loading machine, down specific or gentle soap, cool water, and a very long tumble dry on low with dryer balls to break up clumps. Rushing the dry is how bags get ruined.
- Air it out every morning on the trip. Ten minutes of sun or dry air pulls out overnight moisture that would otherwise compound each night.
- Never sleep in damp clothes. You are putting that water directly into your insulation.
